Where We Work
Bangladesh
NREL and USAID worked to assess wind resource potential in Bangladesh with the aim of accelerating large scale wind energy deployment in the country.
Colombia
USAID is supporting energy security in Colombia by helping the Government of Colombia diversify its energy mix, stabilize energy costs, and electrify rural areas in support of peace and development.
Ghana
Greening the Grid partnered with USAID's Integrated Resource and Resilience Planning project to provide customized training to Ghana's power sector stakeholders on planning for an advanced energy system that supports solar energy integration, both at the transmission and distribution scales. USAID’s Power Africa program is working with utilities and the government in Ghana with the goal of reaching universal access to electricity by 2020, in part through additional renewable resources.
Haiti
Welcome to the Haiti Where we Work page! NREL and USAID are helping Haiti improve access to affordable and reliable energy to by deploying advanced energy technologies, particularly minigrids. This collaboration will enable broader energy sector planning and policymaking in Haiti.
India
USAID’s Partnership for Clean Energy with the Government of India is providing support in planning and deploying renewable energy resources. USAID and NREL closely collaborated with India's Ministry of Power and other power system stakeholders to spearhead a detailed grid integration study. The study examined the operational impacts and costs of meeting India's goal to integrate 175 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2020. This interactive map visualizes the results of the study, finding that maintaining coal-system flexibility and encouraging interstate power transmission are key factors in reducing India’s curtailment of renewables.
Indonesia
The Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and state-run distribution utility, PLN, are partnering with USAID and NREL to evaluate the economic implications of solar energy deployment in Indonesia.
Jamaica
USAID and NREL supported the Office of Utilities Regulation in Jamaica to assess the effectiveness of the Jamaica Public Service Company Limited’s Net-Billing Pilot Program and provide context-specific recommendations for program improvement. The Caribbean Clean Energy Program aims engage in donor coordination and financing for renewable energy and energy efficiency projects.
Kazakhstan
USAID and NREL are supporting Kazakhstan's Ministry of Energy and system operator to assess the operational impacts of increasing shares of wind and solar in the generation mix. NREL is also providing training on datasets and tools to assess wind and solar resource potential and to identify least-cost locations for renewable energy project siting.
Lao PDR
USAID’s Smart Infrastructure for the Mekong (SIM) Program sponsored the Energy Alternatives Study for the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR). This study sought to provide the Lao Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) with improved tools, data and analytic capabilities to inform their energy planning activities to 2030.
Mexico
USAID collaborated with Mexico’s energy ministry, market operator, and major utility to support Mexico’s first renewable energy auctions, which attracted $6 billion for solar, wind and geothermal installations. These auctions resulted in record low solar and wind prices for the region, on par with the price of natural gas, and helped the Mexican government gain the confidence of foreign investors. The winning bids will enable Mexico to gain 14.3 terawatt-hours of new, clean electrical power. Increasing investment in clean energy helps Mexico curb air pollution, increase energy security, and open new markets for clean energy entrepreneurs.
Peru
USAID and NREL are supporting Peru's Ministry of Energy and Mines to understand the business case for distributed PV across Peru under the current regulatory framework.
Philippines
Greening the Grid worked with several power sector planning agencies in the Philippines to develop a solar and wind grid integration study for the Luzon-Visayas interconnection, testing the operational feasibility of 30% and 50% renewable energy targets. The Philippines have been incorporated into USAID and NREL’s Renewable Energy Data Explorer (RED-E) platform for geographic information mapping and analysis.
Southeast Asia
Welcome to the Greening the Grid Southeast Asia! The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) collaborate with countries and regional partners to support energy transitions throughout this region. On this page you can explore projects that highlight key questions that partners are exploring across the region.
Thailand
Greening the Grid worked with USAID's Clean Power Asia program to analyze the short-term revenue and rate impacts of distributed PV adoption for Thai distribution utilities to inform the rollout of a nationwide distributed PV policy and pilot program.
Vietnam
Greening the Grid partnered with Vietnam's Low Emission Energy Program to provide customized training to Vietnam's power sector stakeholders on methodologies for enhancing the representation of variable renewable energy in power development planning. USAID’s Clean Power Asia program includes Vietnam and has worked to improve power sector planning and secure project financing.
